Adventurers and activists unite! Nature Iraq is offering the opportunity of a lifetime in the form of a boat trip down the Tigris River. For 2-14 days in September, the Tigris River Flotilla invites you to explore the riverbanks of Turkey and Iraq and team up with local communities to help conserve the natural environment.
Brought to you by some of the minds behind Iraq’s first ever national park, the trip’s mission is threefold: to promote awareness of the challenges facing the Tigris River, to collect data on the ecology and condition of the water, and to empower local communities striving to preserve the region’s natural resources. As an added bonus, by traveling in traditional boats (the guffa, tarada, and kelek) the Flotilla hopes to honor the rich cultural and historical heritage of Mesopotamia.
Our last stop in this year’s Travel Philanthropy series, the Tigris River Flotilla is the perfect trip for the volunteer with a taste for action. The boats launch on September 15—sign up here and you’ll be cruising in your kelek in no time.
