Kindness is a powerful force—lending our lives meaning and quite often giving us exactly what we need to move forward. In the case of Leon Logothetis, random acts of kindness helped transport him from Times Square all the way to Hollywood on just $5 a day.

Inspired by the true story of Che Guevara in Walter Salles’ 2004 biopic The Motorcycle Diaries, Logothetis left everything behind, including his life in London and his lucrative career, and made a life for himself traveling the world on the benevolent good grace of strangers. From California to Moscow’s Red Square, he worked his way around the world, investing his trust in the universe and the inherent kindness of the human heart to get him where needed to go. His travels, which play out over three seasons of the television series Amazing Adventures of a Nobody, reveal the willingness of people to engage in a unique day-to-day philanthropy—donating time, lodgings, or whatever else they have to a stranger in need. To Logothetis, it’s “a heart exchange, a connection exchange,” part of a sweeping “wave of kindness” not unlike the concept of paying it forward.
